Each year, the Vancouver Island chapters of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP) honor donors and volunteers whose gifts of time, expertise and resources contribute significantly to the success of our non-profit agencies. National Philanthropy Day recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations in our community that are making a difference in the lives of others. Award recipients who were chosen for this year’s honours are:
Generosity of Spirit Award - presented by the Victoria Foundation
Dr. Allen and Dr. Loreen Vandekerkhove
The ‘true gift is in the giving’ are the words of Dr. Allen and Dr. Loreen Vandekerkhove, and they have many grateful organizations thanking them for this spirit. In fact, five organizations worked together to submit a nomination for this outstanding couple. Since the sale of their family business, they have donated over $6.5 million to the local Victoria region and beyond. They celebrate Vancouver Island and Gulf Island organizations that show a strong commitment to community first, grassroots initiatives and volunteerism. They are active, caring philanthropists who have made an enormous impact on the health, wellness and vibrancy of our community. We thank them for their generosity.

Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer Award - presented by Telus
Lorne Jack
Lorne Jack has two passions: his family and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation (SPHF). As a Board member of SPHF for over ten years, Lorne has had a major impact on fundraising for many large projects at the hospital. During his time as president of the board, he has made personal appeals to the hospital’s donors and has motivated volunteers to give personally and to help raise funds. Lorne is fully involved with all Foundation projects to ensure efficiency and pragmatism prevails. It is a source of great pride to Lorne that these projects come in on-time and on-budget, and his passion shows in his fundraising success.

Corporate Citizenship Award - presented by the University of Victoria
Peninsula Co-op
The Peninsula Co-Op is a conscientious, active and contributing member of our local community. Since its founding in 1977, Peninsula Co-op has committed itself to ‘Moving Ahead by Giving Back’, a corporate slogan which they honour through a significant community support program, their staff and Board voluntarism, mentorship and rebate support to their membership. Through their Community Support Program, 3% of their bottom line goes to help the local community in a variety of ways. This program has grown from $44,000 in 1999 to just over $300,000 in 2010. This is an extraordinary company that makes us all proud.
