Local Community Leaders recognized for a lifetime of giving

Victoria, November 15th, 2007 -
Inspirational community leaders receive recognition today at the 2007 National Philanthropy Day breakfast, co-presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP). Those selected stand out as citizens committed to a lifetime of helping others and making an important contribution to our community. Two local students will also be recognized for their Youth Writers Challenge essay submissions. National Philanthropy Day recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations that are making a difference in the lives of others.

Local recipients being honoured today are the Shemilt Family, owners of Island Blue Print, who will receive the Generosity of Spirit Award presented by Victoria Foundation for their dedication and generosity in supporting numerous charities and Jane Heffelfinger, a lifelong volunteer will receive the Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer Award presented by TELUS. The final award goes to The University Women's Club of Victoria for Outstanding Philanthropic Service Club. Out of over 40 essay submissions for the Youth Writers Challenge on the topic of 'Changing the World with a Giving Heart', two local students are selected to receive recognition for their heartfelt stories.

"We are absolutely thrilled at the turnout for this year's event and for the wonderful leaders who have been selected." says Jennifer Jasechko, co-chair of the event. "There are so many dedicated, generous individuals and groups in our community, it was tough to select only 3 winners, but those selected are well deserving of this recognition." Philanthropy is defined as: 'the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations'. National Philanthropy Day is the opportunity to honour those in our community that are making their mark and enriching the lives of others. The 2007 National Philanthropy Day breakfast will take place in the Crystal Ballroom, Fairmont Empress Hotel to a sold-out crowd of community and business leaders from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 15th.

The award recipients for the 2007 National Philanthropy Day celebration have been chosen. National Philanthropy day recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations in our community that are making a difference in the lives of others.

Generosity of Spirit Award 2007, presented by Victoria Foundation- The Shemilt Family The Shemilt family has owned Victoria's Island Blue Print and Reprographics for over 50 years. Following her husband Vic's death, Pam Shemilt and her three sons - Mike, Craig and Rob - have carried on the firm's tradition of philanthropy. Charities that have benefited from the family's generosity include the David Foster Foundation, BC Cancer Foundation, Victoria Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation, Sooke Fine Arts Show, University of Victoria, International Reprographic Association, Rotary Club of Victoria, Kinsmen, READ Society, Vic-Van-Isle Kinsmen Club, Flowers in the Park (Beacon Hill), Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Society, the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children, the Aga Khan Partnership Walk, George Pringle Camp, First Metropolitan Church, and Camosun College who nominated the family for this award. Pam is on the Cabinet for the Pacific Sport Institute, and the family support many amateur sporting events and groups.

Through their efforts, the University Women's Club distributes $17,000 in annual scholarships and bursaries to Camosun College, the University of Victoria and at Royal Roads University. The club's philanthropic legacy was achieved by many small steps through afternoon teas, bridge/mah jong parties, dances, a boat charter, historic fashion shows, an Emily Carr birthday party, raffles, garage sales, affinity programs and direct sales of items. A modest stipend is retained from each member's dues for the Society's projects and each member becomes a fundraiser. Many members serve on the boards of directors of local non-profit organizations, furthering their contributions to our community.

The National Philanthropy Day celebration will be held on Thursday, November 15th, 2007, 7:30am at the Fairmont Empress Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. The awards breakfast is sold out.
